The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has been petitioned by the Center for Science in the Public Interest for processed meat and poultry packaging to include warning labels for products associated with colorectal cancer.
The CPSI petition mentions the findings of a 2015 report from the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer that concluded that “processed meat is ‘carcinogenic to humans.’”
The International Agency for Research on Cancer’s statement has come under heavy fire, with the WHO saying there may have been “shortcomings” with the results.
The meat industry countered the initial report by citing a plethora of studies that did not link colon cancer with the consumption of meat, and in fact called for a balanced diet that included meat.
There is little evidence to suggest that the USDA will push the petition forward based on a single study.
